Mexico: A 13-Day Cultural & Culinary Journey
Welcome to an unforgettable 13-day adventure that travels from the vibrant pulse of Mexico City to the ancient majesty of Oaxaca, tracing the cultural, historical, and culinary soul of the nation. This journey balances cultural immersion with authentic local experiences. We begin in Mexico City, exploring its historic center, essential museums, and the pioneering LGBTQ+ history woven into its core. From there, we journey through the silver city of Taxco to the culinary and architectural gem of Puebla. Finally, we immerse ourselves in Oaxaca, the land of mezcal, ancient Zapotec ruins (Monte Alban), and breathtaking natural landscapes (Hierve Agua), concluding with a celebratory farewell dinner. This trip offers an exceptional blend of grand monuments and intimate, bohemian neighborhoods, promising a deep connection with Mexico's enduring spirit. Day 1: Mexico City Arrival You can arrive anytime today and we will be at the hotel to greet you. Our lovely arrival hotel will be close to the historic Zócalo. Time to chill and relax, or take a walk as nothing is planned until this evening when we kick off our culinary adventure with an authentic included welcome dinner. Day 2: City Culture & LGBTQ+ History Morning immersion into the "Gay City Center," uncovering pre-Columbian gender diversity, colonial-era resistance movements, and the influence of Frida Kahlo’s circle. Afternoon visit to the stunning Palacio de Bellas Artes. Evening is free time, with an open invitation to join us at a local restaurant. Day 3: Museums & Parks Journey through time at the Anthropology Museum to view unparalleled pre-Columbian artifacts. Afternoon ascent to Chapultepec Castle for panoramic city views, followed by a stroll through the park. This evening is free time, feel free to book a restaurant of your choice (we have lots of suggestions) Day 4: Ancient Teotihuacan Early morning pilgrimage to the awe-inspiring pyramids of Teotihuacan (Pyramid of the Sun and Moon). Enjoying a unique lunch experience inside a cave at La Gruta. Evening free time with an open invitation to join us at a local restaurant. Day 5: Frida Kahlo & Xochimilco Morning exploring the bohemian streets of Coyoacan. Afternoon immersion into the world of Frida Kahlo at her namesake museum. Late afternoon glide along the vibrant canals of Xochimilco aboard a traditional trajinera. Evening free time with an open invitation to join us at a local restaurant. Day 6: Travel to Puebla via Taxco Bid farewell to Mexico city and journey towards Puebla. Stopping enroute in Taxco, a picturesque silver-mining town, for a stroll and lunch. Arrive in Puebla, check into our lovely centrally located Hotel, and enjoy the evening. Evening free time with an open invitation to join us at a local restaurant. Day 7: Puebla Join us on a morning walk to explore Puebla's UNESCO-listed historic center. Highlights include the magnificent cathedral, colorful Talavera pottery, and indulging in local specialties like mole poblano. Afternoon is free time to explore on your own and tonight's Dinner restaurant location is a treat with panoramic city views. Day 8: Travel to Oaxaca Morning departure from Puebla, journeying toward the captivating city of Oaxaca. We will stop in Tehuacan for lunch together before arriving at Mision de Los Angeles for an evening of free exploration. Day 9: Monte Alban & Downtown Morning ascent to the ancient Zapotec capital of Monte Alban for breathtaking valley views. Lunch at Las Quince Letras, a celebrated spot for exquisite Oaxacan cuisine. Evening spent exploring Downtown, finding a restaurant that takes our fancy. Day 10: Oaxaca Cultural Immersion Morning exploring the stunning former monastery that houses the Santo Domingo Cultural Center. Afternoon sensory overload in Oaxaca's vibrant, bustling local markets, famous for crafts and produce. Evening free time with an open invitation to join us at a local restaurant. Day 11: Hierve Agua & Mezcal Morning journey to the otherworldly petrified waterfalls of Hierve Agua for unique natural pools. Afternoon includes a tasting and tour at a Mezcal Destilería to learn about the region’s famous spirit. Evening free time and its "Pick your own restaurant night" Day 12: Oaxaca Free Day & Farewell Enjoy a final free day in Oaxaca to revisit favorite spots or find hidden gems. We gather in the evening for a memorable included farewell dinner. Day 13: Departure day You can depart anytime today, or extend your adventure in wonderful Oaxaca or onto the gay meccas of Puerto Vallarta or Playa Zipolite. Evening meals together are always a highlight of any OTS trip, sharing stories of the day, and getting to know each other, is what its all about. We will always have a restaurant booked which you are welcome to join. Of course you also welcome to opt out and have a chill evening, or book a special restaurant treat. Its your holiday! As with all our trips you must let go of the concept you're signing up for a typical tour, you're not, you're coming on a semi-structured adventure with all the hard work done for you. There will be plenty of opportunities for self-directed exploring using the knowledge and experience of your host Richard. Things will go wrong some days, and changes need to be taken in your stride.
