Days 1-5: Tokyo – The Pulse of Modern Japan Welcome to Tokyo, Japan’s dynamic capital and the world’s most populous metropolis! This city is a thrilling blend of ancient tradition and cutting-edge innovation, offering unlimited opportunities to eat, shop, and explore. Expect everything from serene gardens to bustling neon districts. We'll be based in Shinjuku ni-chome, the renowned gay district, providing a vibrant hub for our Tokyo adventures. You can arrive anytime today as there are no scheduled activities. If you arrive before check-in (usually 2-3 PM), feel free to leave your luggage at reception and explore your surroundings. Use this time to familiarize yourself with the hotel and rest up before our adventure truly begins! Tonight, we'll gather for a Welcome Dinner, officially kicking off our journey and allowing everyone to connect. We'll also visit both ancient temples and shrines, many lovingly rebuilt after past events. While Tokyo boasts an amazing array of transport options (trains, subways, buses, trams), be prepared for lots of walking! This is part of the joy of exploring Japan's intricate layers on foot. • Accommodation: Hotel in Shinjuku ni-chome • Meals: Breakfast Day 3: Tokyo – East Side & Cultural Riches Our focus shifts to Tokyo's East side, a hub of culture and history. Tokyo, as the capital, is home to a spectacular array of National Museums, We'll explore Asakusa, home to important temples and shrines, including the famous Senso-ji Temple. Afterwards, we head to Ueno-koen Park, a magnificent green space that also hosts a plethora of museums and art galleries, notably the extensive Tokyo National Museum. Your Time: This afternoon and evening offer flexibility. Gardens of Tranquility: Tokyo's 23 Wards boast fabulous gardens, many themed and meticulously maintained to reflect Japan's distinct four seasons. They are truly meant to be appreciated and enjoyed. Much of Tokyo was famously destroyed during World War II, so you'll see a captivating mix of modern architecture alongside buildings rebuilt to faithfully reflect their ancient counterparts. This blend tells a compelling story of resilience and rebirth. You'll have ample opportunity to explore a specific garden that captivates you or delve into a particular neighborhood that sparks your interest. We'll travel by train and bus to the iconic Five Lakes district. We'll visit some of the best vantage points to capture those unforgettable photos of Mount Fuji. Discover historic shrines and temples around the Five Lakes that beautifully represent Japanese history and a deep appreciation for nature. We'll have a wonderful opportunity to immerse ourselves in traditional Onsen culture. Soaking in a Japanese hot spring is a truly relaxing and rejuvenating experience, especially spectacular in the Kawaguchiko Five Lake district if the weather is kind. • Accommodation: Onsen in Kawaguchiko Five Lake district (prepare for a traditional Japanese inn experience!) • Meals: Breakfast, Dinner Days 6-8: Kyoto – Ancient Capitals & Hidden Gems Step back in time as we continue our exploration in Kyoto, Japan's cultural heart and former imperial capital for over a thousand years (794-1868). Unlike Tokyo, Kyoto largely escaped destruction during WWII, so its countless temples, shrines, and historically priceless structures survive beautifully today. Our journey into Kyoto begins with a focus on its southern and downtown highlights. We'll visit Nijo Castle, the magnificent former residence of the Shogun, and delve into the history of the Kyoto Imperial Palace. Another absolute must-see is the Fushimi Inari Shrine, which offers the ultimate Torii gate experience – prepare to be awestruck by thousands of vibrant orange gates winding through the forest! As the day turns to evening, you'll have the opportunity to explore. The nearby Pontocho Alley nightlife district is one of the best places to find a fantastic mix of fusion restaurants alongside traditional establishments. Our journey begins at Ginkaku-ji Temple, the exquisite Silver Pavilion, nestled at the base of the Higashiyama mountains. These are extraordinary, magnificent examples of Kyoto's traditional history. The Philosopher's Path & Personal Exploration. After exploring the Silver Temple, we'll embark on a leisurely walk along the famous Philosopher's Path. This isn't just a scenic stroll; it's an eclectic mix of ancient temples, traditional homes, local schools, and even modern museums. Your independent time starts here! This is your chance to peel off and delve into what truly captures your interest. Fancy learning about Japan's warrior past? Consider a visit to the Kyoto Samurai Ninja Museum. Prefer art and ancient artifacts? The Sen-Oku Hakukokan Museum might be more your speed. The choice is entirely yours – explore at your own pace, grab a coffee, or simply soak in the atmosphere. A City of Peace & History A smooth 2-hour journey on the Tokaido Shinkansen brings us to Hiroshima. The city itself boasts an amazing array of transport options – trains, ferries, buses, and trams – making it easy to navigate. Peace Memorial Park. Prepare for a deeply moving experience as we visit the Peace Memorial Park. Here, you'll find the Peace Memorial Museum, the poignant A-Bomb Dome, the Cenotaph for the A-Bomb Victims, and the Children’s Peace Monument. It can be a confronting experience, but it's an absolutely essential and worthwhile part of understanding Japan's modern history. For those interested, the reconstructed Hiroshima Castle offers a fascinating glimpse into feudal history, and the tranquil Shukkeien Garden provides a beautiful space for reflection. This afternoon offers opportunities for independent exploration based on your interests. While Hiroshima Station has many dining options, we'll head to the lively Downtown area, just a short walk away, which offers a far wider array of restaurants and bars to tempt your palate. • Accommodation: Hotel in Hiroshima • Meals: Breakfast Day 10: Miyajima – Floating Gates & Friendly Deer No visit to Hiroshima is complete without a journey to the magical Miyajima Island. We'll take a short ferry ride to the island to visit the breathtaking Itsukushima Shrine, home to the most famous "floating" Torii Gate in Japan. While there's usually a queue for that perfect selfie, the experience of being there is unforgettable. Be prepared for the many deer that freely wander, lounge, and search for treats around the island (though feeding them is actively discouraged!). For spectacular panoramic views of the Seto Inland Sea and Hiroshima City beyond, consider taking the cable car up Mount Misen – or, for the more adventurous, a hike to the top! Return to Hiroshima for another evening to explore the city's culinary delights. • Accommodation: Hotel in Hiroshima • Meals: Breakfast Days 11-15: Himeji, Osaka & Nara – Castles, Urban Vibrancy & Ancient Deer Our journey continues as we head west by Shinkansen, first to a magnificent castle, then settling into the dynamic city of Osaka for our final few nights, with an unforgettable day trip to Nara. Day 11: Himeji Castle & Arrival in Osaka We'll depart by Shinkansen, making a crucial stop in Himeji to explore the sensational Himeji Castle. This stunning "White Heron Castle" is the most complete and extensive original castle in Japan, a true architectural marvel. You may also wish to explore the adjacent Kokoen Garden, a short walk from the castle's main gate. After soaking in Himeji's grandeur, we'll continue our Shinkansen journey to Osaka, our base for the next four nights. After we settle into our hotel. Then, you'll have some free time to begin exploring the local area. The Kita District (Umeda) is a lively, modern area of Osaka, packed with interesting buildings like the Umeda Sky Building, which boasts a wonderful open-air observation deck on its roof, offering fantastic city views as the sun sets. Dinner at leisure in Osaka, perhaps exploring the bustling Umeda area. • Accommodation: Hotel in Osaka • Meals: Breakfast Day 12: Osaka – History, City Views & Bay Area Fun Today is about diving deeper into Osaka's historical roots and modern attractions. Explore Shitennoji (四天王寺), one of Japan's oldest temples, founded in 593 AD by Prince Shotoku. Despite being rebuilt several times, its design faithfully reflects its original 6th-century style. Head to the lively Osaka Bay Area. Here, you can visit the impressive Osaka Aquarium (Kaiyukan), one of the largest in the world, and explore the Tempozan Marketplace. For a quirky challenge, try to conquer Tempozan Mountain, famously known as one of Japan's lowest mountains! • Evening: Enjoy the vibrant food scene of Osaka. • Accommodation: Hotel in Osaka • Meals: Breakfast Day 13: Osaka – Minami District & Dotonbori Delights Prepare for a day of sensory overload in Osaka's famed Minami District, the city's entertainment and shopping heart. This morning we'll immerse ourselves in the electric atmosphere of Dotonbori. We'll take a cruise on the Dotonbori canal to see the iconic neon signs and bustling streets from a unique water perspective. After lunch we get the chance to stroll through Hozenji Yokocho, a charming stone-paved alley lined with traditional shops and restaurants – truly one of Osaka's most beautiful streets.
