South India:
A Journey Through the Dravidian Soul Chennai – Pondicherry – Thanjavur – Madurai – Periyar – Alleppey – Varkala – Cochin South India is a land of profound contrasts, where the rise and fall of ancient dynasties have left a legacy of prosperous Dravidian culture and magnificent architecture. This curated journey takes you through the lush landscapes of Tamil Nadu and Kerala, and the charming French corridors of Pondicherry. Accompanied by our expert Pan Indian guide RAJ, you will experience the generous nature of the local people and the finest sights of the subcontinent, all while enjoying as seamless, and stress-free (as much as possible in India) travel experience. Days 1–2: Chennai – The Gateway to the South Welcome to Chennai, the vibrant capital formerly known as Madras. Your journey begins with a warm welcome at the airport and a transfer to your hotel. After a trip briefing by your host, we dive into the city's soul with a visit to the iconic Marina Beach and the historic St. Thomas Basilica. The following day, we explore the Chennai Museum and the towering Kapaleshwar Temple, leaving plenty of time to wander the local markets and soak in the city’s energy. Days 3–4: Pondicherry – A Touch of France We depart for the former French colony of Pondicherry, stopping en route at Mahabalipuram. This coastal town is world-famous for its 7th-century Shore Temples, featuring exquisite rock carvings that have weathered a millennium of sea spray. Upon reaching Pondicherry, you’ll notice the distinct European flair of the Old Quarter. Our time here includes a visit to Auroville, the "Universal Township" dedicated to human unity, followed by the Sri Aurobindo Ashram. Spend your afternoons wandering through bougainvillea-draped streets, admiring Indo-French architecture, and discovering the local history at the Pondicherry Museum. Day 5: Thanjavur – The Chola Legacy We journey inland to Thanjavur (Tanjore), one of India’s most significant heritage sites. The centerpiece of our visit is the Brihadeeswarar Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site built in 1010 AD. This architectural marvel stands as a testament to the power of the Chola Empire. After marveling at the temple's soaring vimana, we visit the Thanjavur Museum to view its priceless collection of bronze icons. Days 6–7: Madurai – The Varanasi of the South Continuing to the holy city of Madurai, we enter a world of ancient spirituality. We will walk the lively, labyrinthine streets leading to the Sri Meenakshi Temple, where lamp-lit corridors and vibrant shrines create a mystifying atmosphere. Our stay also includes a visit to the Gandhi Museum, housed in a historic palace, which commemorates the life and legacy of the Mahatma. Days 8–9: Periyar (The Spice Highlands) Leaving the plains behind, we drive into the scenic Western Ghats toward Periyar (Thekkady). The air here is thick with the scent of cardamom and pepper. We’ll explore local spice shops in Kumily and walk through a verdant spice plantation. The next morning features a guided nature walk through Periyar National Park, where we hope to spot wild elephants with the help of expert jungle trackers. You’ll also enjoy a taste of famous Nilgiri tea, with optional evenings dedicated to the ancient martial art of Kalaripayattu or a traditional Ayurvedic massage. Day 10: Alleppey – The Backwater Life Today, we board a traditional Keralan Houseboat for a signature South Indian experience. Drift through a network of canals, rice fields, and coconut groves as your onboard chef prepares delicious, freshly cooked local cuisine. You will spend the night on the water, lulled to sleep by the gentle rhythm of the backwaters. (Note: Air-conditioning is provided during the night for your comfort). Days 11–12: Varkala – Cliffs and Coastline We head south to Varkala, where the red cliffs meet the Arabian Sea. The next two days are yours to unwind: sip coffee in a cliffside café, take a dip in the ocean, or visit the ancient Janardana Swami Temple. This is the perfect setting for a final restorative Ayurvedic massage. Days 13–14: Cochin – The Queen of the Arabian Sea Our journey culminates in Cochin (Fort Kochi), a historic port city shaped by Chinese, Portuguese, Dutch, and British influences. Our exploration includes St. Francis Church, the Dutch Palace, and the iconic Chinese Fishing Nets. We’ll wander the colorful bazaars of Fort Kochi and witness an mesmerizing Kathakali dance performance, characterized by its elaborate costumes and dramatic storytelling. Day 15: Departure After a final breakfast, you will be transferred to Cochin International Airport. We say our goodbyes as you depart with a heart full of memories from the incredible south of India. Solo travellers This trip is a twin share, or pay a single supplement for a room of your own.
